Following the Lions 47-9 thumping of the Dallas Cowboys, Heach Coach Dan Campbell confirmed that defensive end Aidan Hutchinson suffered a season-ending broken tibia during the third quarter.
With the Lions winning 34-6, Aiden Hutchison was still going hard early in the third quarter when he went down with the injury. The NFL’s sack leader recorded a sack on the play where he was hurt. He’ll finish his season with 7.5 sacks in five games.

The injury was bad enough that the NFL broadcast chose not to show replays of it happening.
“Hate it for Hutch. That’s tough,” Campbell said in a post-game press conference. “It was tough. He’s in good hands right now. He’s being taken care of. He’ll stay back here, and obviously he’s going to be down a little while, so that’s tough, and it’s hard when you lose somebody like him. We’ll know a lot more after this and obviously wish him the best.”
Detroit Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson sustained a significant injury during a recent game, requiring immediate surgical intervention. Head Coach Dan Campbell confirmed that Hutchinson suffered a fracture of his tibia, although the team’s public relations department later clarified that it is not a compound fracture.
The injury occurred during the third quarter, with 11:43 remaining on the clock. Hutchinson had just completed a 6-yard sack of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott when he realized the severity of the situation. The injury appeared particularly gruesome, leading to immediate concern among teammates and fans alike.
Emergency Response and Hospitalization
Medical personnel attended to Hutchinson on the field for an extended period, ultimately placing his left leg in an air cast. Instead of proceeding toward the X-ray room, the medical cart transporting Hutchinson headed straight to the tunnel, directing him to a local trauma hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
“Hate it for Hutch. That’s tough,” Campbell expressed in a post-game interview. “It was tough. He’s in good hands right now. He’s being taken care of. He’ll stay back here, and obviously, he’s going to be down a little while, so that’s tough, and it’s hard when you lose somebody like him. We’ll know a lot more after this and obviously wish him the best.”
After several minutes, a cart came out to collect Hutchinson and drove him into the tunnel where an ambulance awaits in case players need to be taken directly to a hospital. The entire Lions sideline and many Cowboys players came onto the field and knelt or stood around Hutchinson as medical personnel placed a cast around his leg and lifted him onto the cart.
Impact on the Team and Performance
Before his injury, Hutchinson was having a standout game, recording three tackles, one sack, and three quarterback hits. With this performance, he elevated his season total to an impressive 7.5 sacks, establishing himself as a leading contender for the Defensive Player of the Year award. His absence will undoubtedly be felt as the Lions move forward in the season.
The severity of Hutchinson’s injury was so alarming that the broadcast network, Fox, opted not to show a replay of the incident, highlighting the extent of concern surrounding the injury.
Team Triumph Despite Adversity
Despite the unfortunate news regarding Hutchinson, the Lions managed to secure a resounding victory against the Cowboys, winning 47-9. This win not only boosts the team’s morale but also underscores their resilience in the face of adversity. As the Lions navigate the remainder of the season, they will have to adjust to Hutchinson’s absence and rely on the depth of their roster to maintain their competitive edge.
If someone ends up running away with the NFC North this season, Week 6 may end up being the week we all look back on as the starting point. The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers both put up monster games in blowout wins on Sunday, but it was the Detroit Lions’ game in Dallas that will probably end up making the biggest headlines.
Midway through the second half, Detroit’s star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson went down during a pass rush with what looked like a serious leg injury. Then, with a second look, it was definitely a serious leg injury. It looked like Hutchinson got rolled up on, but I do not recommend rewatching it – you can absolutely take my word for it.
After a few minutes on the ground talking with trainers, Hutchinson was eventually carted off the field and into the Lions’ locker room. Twitter diagnoses should always be taken with a grain of salt, but there was a very good reason why ‘broken leg’ was trending on Twitter.
The division is still wide open, too: if the playoffs started right now, all four teams would be in. They haven’t even started playing either other, either: the Packers and Vikings have played each other once, but neither the Lions or the Bears have played a division game as of Week 6.
Now the Lions will have to (presumably) play all six of their divisional games without Hutchinson, who was the NFL’s sack leader through the first six games of the year. It couldn’t come at a worse time, either – he was playing the best football of his career this season, leading all edge rushers in ESPN’s pass rush win rate rankings as well as being the highest-ranked edge rusher by Pro Football Focus.
Players from both sidelines walked onto the field at AT&T Stadium on Sunday to offer support for Detroit Lions star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson after he suffered what appeared to be a gruesome left leg injury.
Hutchinson, a Pro Bowl defensive end, sacked Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in the third quarter of Sunday’s game. His leg bent awkwardly as he pulled Prescott down, and medical staffers rushed onto the field to tend to Hutchinson.
